How to Organize Your Closet

Keeping your apartment organized can seem like a huge, neverending feat. But it definitely doesn’t have to be that way! Stay organized in your home and, specifically, your closet by trying out these tips and applying the principles discussed in today’s Collegiate Communities Blog. It will set a fresh, clean tone for the rest of the summer and the transition to the next one here in West Lafayette, IN!

First, take everything out. This can be a long process, depending on how many things you have in your space. But it’s valuable because it gives you a chance to clean the shelves, vacuum the floor, wipe off the baseboards, and come up with a fresh way to organize your clothes once you put them back in.

Stay productive as you take things out by creating piles for them: give away, throw away, and keep. Evaluate each item according to how much you love it, how often you wear or use it, and how valuable it is to you. If you’re unsure, try the hanger hack: place the clothes you’re unsure of on a hanger in one side of the closet with the hanger facing one way. If and when you choose to wear the item (and after it’s cleaned), replace it in the same place but with the hanger facing the other way. After a period of time, donate or get rid of the untouched items.

If you want more immediate help deciding whether or not to keep an item, invite a friend over to give you feedback on how well items fit or look, and even to give your unwanted things to, if they’d like.

Once you’re ready, it’s time to put things back in your closet! If you’ve been thinking of this throughout the whole process, it should be easy. Find an organization method that works for you and your wardrobe. It can be according to color, type of clothing, or season. Create some extra space by trying some closet organization hacks, such as using ornament boxes for socks or baby clothes and hanging your scarves and belts all together. Whatever your specific methods, doing this can make it easier to navigate your closet each day.
